This book, first published in 2000, presents an edition of seventeen ad status model sermons for the preaching of the crusades from the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. The majority of these texts had never been printed before publication of this book. They are unique sources for the content of crusade propaganda in the later Middle Ages, giving a rare insight into the way in which propaganda shaped the public's view of crusading during that period. Accompanying the Latin texts is an English translation which is aimed at making these sources accessible to a wider circle of students and scholars. The first part of the book consists of a study of these model sermons which focuses on their place in the pastoral reform movement of the thirteenth century, their specific character as models for the use of crusade propagandists, their internal structure, and the image of the crusade conveyed in the texts.

This collection of seventeen original essays offers new perspectives on the history and sources of the crusades from the Council of Clermont in 1095 to the late fifteenth century, and of the societies they established in Palestine, Greece, Cyprus and the Baltic. The volume begins with a masterly survey of the concepts and strategies of the crusading movement. The historical case studies deal with the reigns of Baldwin I and Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, the role of castles in Greece and Cyprus, the military orders and crusade vows in England, and female warriors in the Baltic crusades. The essays on sources provide critical assessments and re-assessments of the narratives of the First and Fourth Crusades, introduce little known Arabic sources on the Muslim population of crusader Palestine, and analyse interpretations of the last days of the crusader kingdom in medieval theology and modern historiography. The volume concludes with a classified bibliography of the First Crusade, comprising over 400 texts, monographs and articles published up to 1997.

The success of the First Crusade, and its capture of Jerusalem in 1099, has been conventionally explained in terms of its ideological and political motivation. This book looks at the First Crusade primarily as a military campaign and asks why it was so successful. Modern writing about the crusade has tended to emphasise the moral dimension and the development of the idea of the crusade, but its fate was ultimately decided on the field of battle. Victory in the East looks at the nature of war at the end of the eleventh century and the military experience of all the contending parties in order to explain its extraordinary success. It is the first such examination, taking into account all other factors but emphasising the military.
